Alderwood Costco going in across from Alderwood Mall?
The news today is that the old Lynnwood High School property across from Alderwood Mall is going to be a new Costco store. The new Alderwood Costco store will be the anchor tenant for the proposed Lynnwood Crossing development.
Honestly this seems like an odd move for them, but I guess they have their reasons. Personally I think the IKEA store that was rumored to be going in there originally was a better fit. As it is, right now there is a Costco in Silver Lake, one in Shoreline and then the business Costco in Lynnwood. Seems like plenty to me.
As the Herald points out though, they are regarded as a good employer and will add a good handful of jobs to the area. It is interesting to see the announcement of two new grocery stores, the other being Whole Foods on 196th during what most consider to be bad economic times. I guess when things are bad, it really is time to push ahead harder!
What do you think? Is this a good move or bad move for them, and how do you think the addition of a 160,000 sq. foot store will affect the area. Post your comments and let me know.
By the way – If having Costco come into the neighborhood has you either wanting to move in or move out, I can help you out with that!
UPDATE! 10/24/2011 – There is an open house Tuesday, October 25, 2011 – 4:30-7:30 PM to go over the 5 proposed development plans for the old Lynnwood High School property. Here is a link to the Lynnwood Crossing page if you want to take a look at what they are proposing!
UPDATE – 7/2/2014 – Construction of the new Lynnwood Costco is finally getting underway with the official breaking ground ceremony. Link Here. Construction will be underway for some time with the new store planned on opening in late 2015. Until construction is complete, I can imagine it will be a bee hive of activity, with construction vehicles everywhere. I still am curious how it will affect the already crowded mall traffic situation.
